Time-Lapse: ABB1200 Robot Paints 'THE HOUR' with 3,600 Brushstrokes (One for Each Second)

For a number of years, my sculptural practice has incorporated industrial robots, utilizing Grasshopper and HAL for programming. Initially, I employed these systems as fabrication tools to produce elements of larger sculptures. My current focus, however, has shifted from production to an inquiry into the robot's role as a conceptual agent: its potential to replace the human hand, its introduction of a distinct temporal dimension to the work, and the subsequent redefinition of the artist's role within this automated process. My time in Tokyo is a pivotal opportunity to deepen this research, moving beyond technical proficiency into a more profound exploration of these themes. Ultimately, I envision robotic systems not as manufacturing aids, but as performative entities within a research-based practice. My aim is to position them within the gallery context as central, active protagonists in the work itself.
